Dear Creative Community,

Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Common Thread, a magazine dedicated to the

power of photography, the visual arts, fiber arts, and every genre of the written word. This

publication was born from a simple yet profound idea: that despite our different

backgrounds, ages, and life stories, there is a vibrant, shared tapestry that connects us all.

This project has been made possible through the generous support of the South Carolina

Humanities Grant, allowing us to create a space where voices from across the generations

can harmonize.

The Common Thread is a proud initiative of Better World Studios, located in the heart of

historic Hickman Hall in Graniteville, South Carolina. Our home is a place of deep history,

dating back to the late 1840s as one of the South's first textile company towns. Hickman

Hall itself was built in 1907 as a community center for mill workers and their families.

Though the industry faced a tragic turning point during the train wreck and chlorine spill

of 2005, the spirit of Graniteville remained unbroken. Today, Hickman Hall stands

completely renovated to its original grandeur, serving once again as a beacon for the

community, now modernized and fully accessible to all.

At Better World Studios, our mission is to foster a creative community through the arts for

a more expressive, just, and sustainable world. We believe in reviving the tradition of

community engagement by building bridges and forming partnerships across the CSRA.

This magazine is an extension of that mission. By featuring contributors of all ages, we aim

to prove that creative expression is the "common thread" that weaves through our history

and into our future. Whether you are a photographer capturing a moment of light, a painter

expressing the abstract, or a writer finding the perfect word, you are part of this story.

Thank you for joining us in this celebration of art and connection. We hope these pages

inspire you to see the threads that bind us together.

Warmly,

Dr. Kayla Hostetler and The Better World Studios Family
